Also, Aataxe's existed in the UW BEFORE the 55 farming build was even invented! It was the dyning nightmares that were added to prevent them from farming. Thus your arguement about "attaxes that deal a ridiculous amount of damage to combat 55ing" is an invalid statement (since prior to the nerfs on the original protective bond 55 build, farming aataxe's and smite crawlers was the POINT of the 55 build).

Aataxe's can be beaten by blindness, weakness, necro hexes, mesmer hexes, snares, traps, or having a protection monk. Quit acting like protective spirit is the only thing that can counter them. It's the only thing that can counter them solo, but in a team build defeating them is perfectly possible and actually pretty easy if you have 6 or so competent players. There are only 3 of them in a group after all. Your entire party should not wipe.

First, well met from another 30 year RPG'er. Chainmail anyone?

Here's the basics of Guild Wars:
1) Guild Wars in no way requires Grind
2) Gulid Wars has certain titles that do require Grind, but they are optional and, with a recent exception (Lockpicks), do no provide any material benefit.
The title I brought up is an RP title. It holds an RP function only. The idea that the game needs a Gold Sink only means that GW has done a horrific job of managing the in game economy and therefore is creating options, which ought to have other more intrinsic game value, as a bandage to staunch the wound. So:

Why not? It's a wonderful Gold Sink for those who like grind.
Punishment of Role Players because of greedy and/or elite pong addicts grind-festing is not an acceptable response to their failure to manage properly.

Totally disagree there. GW is my one hobby. My RL job I'm a manager at a Fortune 100 company. You might call my son young (he also plays GW and is in High School), but not many would accuse me of that anymore.
I am disabled. I have taken a break from GW since last Summer. In the year I played I managed to accrue almost 2,000 hours of game play. In the course of an expectable 280 day work year, that would have made me the equivalent of a professional player averaging about 7 game hours per gaming day. I did receive a couple of greens as gifts from friends. Beyond that, everything I got I earned.

Never have, and never will, buy eBay Gold.
I am aware of the appearance thing. Appearance makes the man, and the concept. Presentation, while it may not deliver stats, it often delivers satisfaction. If I’m going to die repeatedly I might as well look good doing it. However, I have for the most part lost the better part of my friends in the game. They have either moved on or rarely play. One was deaf and had a rough time with people not being considerate of her gaming needs (Just taking a little time to communicate ahead of time. She was an excellent warrior and mesmer, often solo farming with either since people would not call and would not coordinate.) Some may now be overseas.

Send me a private message here, I'll meet you in-game and can help you out gratis. My grind = your gain. I'd also suggest you join a Guild that helps each other out.
At no point in the ads did it say that in order to play equally with others one had to submit to being a member of a guild. The game was, when I purchased it, advertised as an RPG, even though it never has been. The only thing I have in this game that reflects me is my Guild, Colors, and Guild name. However, I know oriental culture respects the hero that being the last member of their Guild/Clan/Tong survives to destroy the evil warlord or emporer and rebuild their guild. And when alliances were first discussed the indications were that we would no longer be penalized for being individuals with individual expression. I no longer even have a single starting character or any of the effort that 2000 hours went into making because of becoming irate and despondent with the failed promise keeping of GW/ANet over Factions, destruction of the MM, the issues with Favor control of FoW/UW access, Guild vs Guild not being open to allow friends to work together flexibly, bots, farming as a way of life to achieve anything, elitist control of content and making it worse with Faction Factory Mega-corps in Factions, etc. But have not and do not surrender my integritty and my honor by submitting my creativity and personal expression to others when I was never told I should be penalized for bothering to express them unless I coerced people into being my subordinates or required them to submit to my rule.

I've yet to find an online game that has true role-play, in either the paper and dice, or the LARP fashion. Can't blame Anet for the complete lack of role-playing that occurs online (yeah, there are a few MUDs out there, but don't get me started...)
I will grant I was very fortunate in my RP experience to be part of one of the best teams of RPs possible. Of the group, I was the only non-thespian, and my major Communications Theory/Human Relations didn’t leave me too far. I have seen the LARP, whose rules are also arranged so that civies will not be too radically alarmed by the weirdoes.
I agree, we are a long way from true role play, even among the educated that practice the art. The best get jobs in Hollywood and quit playing without a paycheck. But the things I outlined should not be difficult concepts to understand. I am the son of art majors. I have an epic sense of story-line, art, and literature. I was raised on La Chanson de Roland and Le Morte d’Arthur, and have since become familiar with others. I have been trying for 30 years to learn to program and never figured it out. But if I could, , I have the basics of my own gaming system outlined.

NONE of this requires Anet, though I do with they would reserve a district SOMEWHERE for RPG'ers. The Grotto comes closest, but meh.
Action, actor, act, setting, and purpose – if these to not align then the RP (especially in a visually communicated medium) is missing. Hence our experience:
“No! Really! I am the Q U E E N Of S T O R M S! Can’t you tell my hair is light lavender like a storm cloud?”
“Yes, little sister,” the Steel Fist says, and winks at his Bone Ringhands.
“You just don’t get it!” she fumes.
“Ok, so why don’t you ever throw something besides firestorm?” slides in the Necro.
“Well, because my Air spells don’t cover enough ground, and,” she blushes, “I like watching Steel Fist's buns when he has to chase after the devourers running away from my fire storm.”

Hmm, bad PUGs methinks.
I swear, with Mythia Astralis and a few others we made it as far as the chamber where the kids quest gets done and we all died. I fought from the moment I materialized until we were all dead without moments rest. That was the most successful I have ever seen in UW. I don’t even know what the quests are because there is no time to enjoy them. The only scenery I remember was stairs and steers. Since it cost 1,000g to fail in a matter of seconds, provided PvP had their collective heads in the sunshine so we could have god’s permission, it just wasn’t worth bothering with.

Sadly, most of my stuff was lost in a friend's house fire back in '98 (no one was injured, TG). But I do miss Engarde, Chainmail, Eldritch Wizardry, Harn Master, the ORIGINAL Traveler, Castle Faulkenstien, and also INWO, Wooden Ships and Iron Men, Third Reich, Alexander vs. Darius, Fortress Europa, Africa Corps, Eastern Front, Richtofen’s War, Feudal, etc.

HawkofStorms,
I have never seen Aataxe's appear in numbers less than 9-15.

Where the HoM could be of most benefit is being able to reacquire one's colors and the armor of one's ancestors. I do not remember how long ago or how far back, but it has been discussed that it would be nice to be able to leave armor from one character on an IP to another owned by the same person who is passing them down from generation to generation. My original group was a family.

Fitz Rinley (Wa/Mo) - Illegitimate son of the Baron of Rin
Mrs Aranel Rinley (Me/Mo) - Wife of Fitz
Gowan Rinley (Mo/Ne) - Legitimate son of the Baron of Rin
Ravenia Rinley (Ne/Wa) - Wife of Gowan
(!CRS!) Rinley (E/Ne) - Son of Fitz
Ash Rinley (R/Mo) - Wife of son

I never bothered finishing or trying to finish factions because of the control of content by guilds and because of the unfulfilled promisses we had been waiting a year, and some people longer, to see on game fixes. But it would have been nice, had GW been something that could have made be feel my thousands of hours of effort were worth anthing, if something like an HoM could be used as a check to transfer armor and customized weapons from a generation of heroes to their descendants.

Even though GW does not require grind doesn't mean that many won't. So gold sinks don't at all hurt the casual player (except that they can't lay claim to a title) and helps balance the economy. I have a guildie who has spent several million in pursuit of titles (he has 20ish maxed). That's what he enjoys doing, so more power to him. And no, he did not eBay any of his millions. He plays constantly, and very intelligently.

No, but it helps make the game more social. Friends lists can work equally well, as most of my farming buddies were on my friends list long before we landed in the same guild.

I will again assert that there has never been a real online RPG, at least in the manner that you and I would define one.

(lots of stuff snipped)

More to the point that you're not going to find what you're looking for in GW, or any Online RPG for that matter. No game can replace the up-close-and-personal experience that is paper and dice RPG's. And it takes me back to my original point, which is you can't blame Anet for a systemic fault of online gaming.

Seriously, if you ever decide to venture into GW again, look me up. It would be my honor to escort you through some of the more dangerous areas. Not much role-play to be had for sure, but lots of fun nevertheless.

I still have Traveler, and Wooden Ships too! Wooden Ships is my all-time favorite game, with the possible exception of Terrible Swift Sword, or Fire in the East, the mother of all wargames. Anything with 6,000 plus pieces that recreates the Nazi invasion of Russia, and is so complex that it plays nearly in real time, can't be beaten!

And I'm serious about my offer to help you out if you ever play GW again. All of my stuff was gained through the honorable slaying of monsters, mostly in Sorrows Furnace, and not through RL eBay gold pruchases.
